WATCHET Town Band celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2018 and is still giving its all.

Now musical director Chris Crockford is broadening out and seeking woodwind players from across West Somerset to join the brass players.

“We want to survive and make music for the local community for another 125 years,” he said.

One member who remembers its heyday in the ’60s is Randolph Bulpin who, at 81, has been part of the band for 66 years. He was a solo cornet player when the band won contests as far afield as Hammersmith and Bristol’s Colston Hall.

He may be the longest serving member, but others have clocked up decades of dedicated band practice and performance with Watchet Town Band – about which there is a full feature in today’s Free Press.
