WATCHET Town were unable to repeat the previous weekend's result when they lost 2-0 at home to Peasedown Miners Welfare in the first division of the Uhlsport Somerset County League.
The visitors would justifiably feel they deserved their victory, but there was never much between the teams with Watchet again suffering from a lack of a cutting edge in the final third.
In front of another large Memorial Ground crowd the Red & Blacks began well enough, playing neat football without looking overly dangerous. Billy Jones brought the ball down and forced a diving save from the keeper, but gradually the younger visiting side began to cause problems with their movement off the ball.
Things might have turned out differently had a superbly struck first time volley from 25 yards out by Brandon Walsh been inches lower instead of thudding against the angle of the bar and post. As it was Peasedown gained the ascendancy in midfield and the home defence was at full stretch at times to keep them at bay in the period leading up to the half-time interval.
The pattern continued much the same after the break with neither side making much headway going forward though Peasedown looked slightly the more dangerous. Watchet survived a number of corners, but after missing a few tackles they failed both to heed the warning and to clear their lines when a visiting substitute was allowed to cut in from the left and fire into the roof of the net to break the deadlock midway through the half.
The Red & Blacks tried to muster a response as the match moved into the later stages and Walsh rose to send his header the wrong side of an upright from Josh Aspey's free kick. Walsh then saw the keeper turn his free kick over the top before forcing him into an even better save with a flying tip-over after engineering room to shoot just inside a crowded penalty area following a corner.
Two of the home substitutes then had goal attempts with Fin Landon's free kick being safely held and Tom Sparks shooting narrowly over before Watchet's need to push more men forward cost them dearly in the closing minutes as Peasedown exploited large gaps to break away and make sure of the points with a second goal.
