WIVELISCOMBE gained a 46-33 home win over St Ives in Counties One Western West in a game which produced 13 tries, writes Roger Bellamy.
Playing down the slope in the first half Wiveliscombe crossed for two early tries with fly half Dan Quick charging down a clearance kick early in the game to out pace the visitors’ defence and fullback Will Thorne finishing off a good threes move in the top corner. Quick converted both.
St Ives’ first try came from centre Will McRitchie who ran an excellent line to score near the post, He converted to reduce Wiveys lead to 14pts 7pts.
Both teams were producing chances but it was the home team who finished with three more well constructed tries before halftime. Scrum half Richard Baker rarely ends a game without scoring and he scored Wivey’s third after showing good pace to breach St Ives defence. Two more tries from winger Tom Lally and prop Matt Ellis, with Dan Quick converting one, gave Wiveliscombe a 31pts 7pts lead at halftime.
Playing down the slope in the second half St Ives used theirlarger forwards to build pressure near Wiveliscombe’s try line and crossed for two tries through Billy Barrett and fly half Nick Prout with Prout converting his try.
Wiveliscombe consolidated their position going on to score another three tries. Lally crossed for his second and centre Callum Pim and second Row Rory Stone adding Wiveliscombe’s final first half points.
St Ives finishede strongly with hooker Levi Webster and fly half Nick Prout crossing for the visitors final tries, Prout converted his try securing St Ives a bonus losing point.
Wiveliscombe move up to second position with their fifth win of the season.
Wiveliscombe 2nd XV lost 38-8 away to their North Petherton counterparts in Counties Three Somerset South.
