MINEHEAD Barbarians Under 14s travelled to Wellington on Sunday morning for what turned out to be a really thrilling encounter at the end of which it was the visitors who triumphed 38-31.
Played in difficult conditions it was the West Somerset side who went into an early lead. However this was short lived and pressure from the Wellington team saw them go in front.
The Wellington pressure continued an by the half time break the home team led 27-12 and for a moment it looked possible that the game might slip away from Minehead.
However, during the break in the game, the young Barbarians side composed themselves ready to try and claw their way back into the game - which thankfully they did.
Captain Harry Tucker led from the front with a standout performance, scoring three tries and rallying his teammates when it mattered most. Arthur Gell was equally impressive, also crossing the line for three tries and showing great pace and support play, while Finlay Penny kicked four conversions.
None of the Barbarians ever gave up even when it looked as though Wellington were going to get themselves back into the game to earn a draw - their effort was consistent throughout and they repelled every move forward by the hosts.
In the end, Minehead edged out a hard-fought 38–31 win in what was a brilliant display of resilience, teamwork, and leadership. A great comeback performance from the whole team
Jasper Mayhew was named Gladiator of the Match for his relentless effort, driving runs, and determination to gain ground when it counted.
Defensively, Jesse Bruce stood tall, earning Barbarian of the Match for his excellent tackling and physical presence — stopping Wellington’s momentum with big hits and brave play.
