MINEHEAD Barbarians returned to league rugby and entertained their home crowd with exciting 50-0 win over Keynsham..
A second row pairing of Colman and Claydon meant that the home scrum was always going forwards. This pair had a hand in Minehead’s first try, from a scrum, winger Chinn was stopped short, a carry by Claydon almost crossed, but Colman claimed the try.
The home midfield kept the visitors under pressure, a pass went loose, Allerton kicked through with Milton supporting to get the second score. Allerton was involved again with a powerful carry which Buckingham supported. The ball then moved back to Gower who burst away and fed Day who sprinted into the corner.
A run by Hurley, burst through to set up a position near the posts, the ball went down the slope and Chinn scored. James Day, who was playing his first league game of the season, grabbed a second. A tap penalty sent Allerton into the visitors defence, Coleman carried, and then the ball went to Gower he drew defenders and sent Day through.
The Barbarian bench of White, Roberts, and Ruddenklau, all joined the fray to ensure there was no let-up in pressure.
With pressure released, the Barbarians attacked again, moving the ball and linking players, then Claydon burst through, unstoppable as he raced to the line. Next a try by Day completed his Hat-Trick. A scrum drive held the defence, and when Hawker released the ball, Milton and Senior gave Day room to score.
The Barbarian’s final try came when an excellent cut-out pass by Allerton gave Chinn space, his pace against a tiring visitor’s defence told, he kicked and won the race to touchdown. Milton converted.
It was especially good to welcome Tom Claydon back into the Black and White and he along with Gower and Day, were awarded players of the match.
