WATCHET travelled to Berrow on Monday and again edged a close encounter by a solitary goal.
This time they left it late, with the game in stoppage time when Aaron Deeks converted their first real chance of the second half after the Red and Blacks had shaded proceedings before the interval.
With Connor Jeromson and Lewis Rogers unavailable, Watchet had Eben Harding and Ryan Strong making their first appearances of the season.
Berrow’s midfield was strengthened by the inclusion of a Western league regular, but the visitors kept him quiet on the whole, with Chris Sully seeing plenty of the ball and encouraging his full backs to use the space available to them.
There were half chances at either end, with Matt Heywood’s shot being held on the line by the diving keeper and another low corner from Deeks passing all the way through the home goalmouth with only a touch lacking.
As usual Watchet had to counter bigger opponents at set pieces, but with defences largely on top nothing really clearcut was created before the break and the pattern remained the same into the second half, although Berrow did come out with more attacking purpose.
Some rare indecision in the visiting rearguard let in a forward, but his tame finish did not trouble Adam Bishop.
As the match wore on a draw seemed the most likely conclusion with the teams cancelling each other out, but Watchet’s perseverance was rewarded when they grabbed their last-gasp winner.
Brandon Walsh appeared to be chasing a lost cause as the ball headed towards the left corner flag before it was played back for Sully to deliver a deep cross beyond the far post.
There young substitute George Dawson challenged in the air to head against his marker and although it appeared to take ages to drop conveniently, Deeks kept his cool to shoot wide of the keeper and secure all three points.
Watchet: A Bishop, R Strong, M Heywood, E Harding, B Robinson, C Sanford, B Walsh, C Sully, J Worth, A Clausen, A Deeks, subs G Dawson, B Jones (both used), C Knight.
l Mainly due to holidays, player availability doesn’t improve for the Red and Blacks for their first home match of the season tomorrow (Saturday) against Odd Down Reserves (kick-off 3pm).
