AS PART of the programme to promote the Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club, various competitions and events have been organized that are due to take place throughout the year.

One such event, played on Saturday, was the Club Day Scramble with each of the fourteen teams comprising one member under 55, one over 55 and either a lady or junior member.

The competition was played in a friendly but competitive spirit, with not even a turn of the head as the world famous Flying Scotsman locomotive passed by on the West Somerset Railway.

The competition proved to be close with the top places being decided on countback after two teams returned with nett 58 after which it was Ian Cape, Steve Woodbury and Ruth Maclennan who were the winners, just in front of runners up were Martyn Westbury, Mark Harris and Deano Carlin.

Five teams finished on nett 60 and taking overall third place on countback were Doug Hayhoe, Andy Kilbride and Pat Lucas.

The first of two competitions played this week by Minehead Seniors was a Bogie on Wednesday. In a very close result, the top four places all finished with the same score (+2) separated only by countback. In the end first place went to Dave Oatridge, second to Tony Connolly, third was claimed by Neville Parsons while fourth place went to Steve Gay.

A Seniors’ medal was played on Friday in almost perfect conditions. Tim Evans, who is currently managing the course particularly well, won the competition with nett 70 (-2) demonstrating once again his ability to consistently find the fairways. In second place with nett 72, and something of a surprise to everyone, was Neville Parsons with another excellent round. Martin Hole took third position with nett 73 on count back.
