THE sunny weather has encouraged consistently large entries to competitions at Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club.

On Friday the Seniors played for the Captain’s Shield (Bowmaker format) and while the course is playing well, there are numerous pockets of dense rough which have recently sprung up and which can seriously wreak havoc with anyone who has got a good card going.

Despite these new hazards, many congratulations must go to the team of Peter Young, Tim Tennant and Kevin Garner who carefully navigated the most difficult areas of the course and who collectively contributed to an excellent haul of 84 points.

The runners up, three point adrift with 81 points, were Steve Gay, Edward Frewin and Dave Ball, while Willie Brown, Bob Arthington and Graham Troman finished third on 78.

The Billy Wynn Men’s 4BBB competition was played throughout the day on Wednesday when 34 pairs took part with 26 pairings finishing with a score of par or better.

The winners, with a magnificent round of nett 61, were Craig Sully and Gavin Paviour; a round that included an eagle on the Par 4 first and birdies on the Par 4 third and Par 3 eighteenth holes.

Second place with nett 63 went to Joel Baker and Lewis Baker while two pairs finished with nett 64, Chris Peters and Ellis Taylor taking third position on countback ahead of Lee Ayres and Nigel Gardner.

The remaining Seniors’ competition played last Monday was a Stableford when 27 players took part in what proved to be a very close contest. The winner on count back with 38 points was Tim Evans who is once again regaining good form now that Sheffield Wednesday have secured Championship status. Mark Ruttley took second place while Roger Read was third with 37 points.
