WATCHET Town have retained their status in the Premier Division of the Uhlsport Somerset County Football League.

They have finished one point above the relegation zone after Worle, the only team who could send them back into the first divsion, were hammered 6-0 away by Nailsea United in their last match of the season.

Earlier in the week, Worle had won 4-2 away to Timsbury United and moved up to within one point of Watchet. And with a slightly better goal difference, a draw for Worle at Nailsea would have enabled Worle to go above the seasiders.

Watchet eventually finished with a total of 21 points from their 30 matches, winning only seven games, drawing one and losing 22. Watchet beat Worle 3-1 at home at the end of March - a result which eventually proved decisive.

It has been a tough season for Watchet following their promotion from the first division at the end of the 2023-24 season. They have found it extremely difficult to field a settled side with injuries and players being unavailable. There was one occasion when they had almost an entire side missing.

Nick Sully, a member of the club’s three-man management committee, said: “The aim of the side this season was to stay up - and we achieved this by the skin of our teeth. It was a challenging season for the want of a better word

“We lost a few players from the previous season. We did not have the same players available from week to week. This was a major problem.”

Bill Jones finished as Watchet’s top scorer for the second successive season.

Watchet will be holding their presentation evening at the club on Friday, May 23 (7.30p.m.), while the club’s AGM will be sometime in June.
