MINEHEAD maintained their 100 per cent start to the season in Division One of the Under 13 section in the Somerset Girls Football League with a convincing 4-1 victory over their visitors Pen Mill from Yeovil.

Last season Pen Mill finished just above their hosts in the league table and Minehead narrowly missed out on maximum points in their previous meetings, so the team knew a big game awaited them.

Minehead started brightly and quickly took control of the game. Their early pressure was rewarded in just the fifth minute with a well taken rebound to open the scoring.

Despite going behind, Pen Mill did not let their heads drop, forcing several brilliant saves from the Minehead goalkeeper to keep the hosts ahead.

The home side continued to create chances but they just couldn’t quite find the finishing touch before the break, and the teams went to the interval Minehead 1-0 Pen Mill.

Both sides came out for the second half refreshed and determined to take control, knowing the game was still up for grabs.

The Minehead attack worked tirelessly to carve out opportunities, and their persistence paid off when their striker pounced on a loose ball from a goal kick to double the lead at 2-0.

Pen Mill responded well, applying sustained pressure and managing to pull a goal back to make it 2-1. Soon after, Minehead were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box, which narrowly missed the target.

With a quarter of an hour remaining, both teams pushed hard, neither willing to settle as the game still seemed in the balance.

In true Minehead style, however, the home side dug deep and gave everything in the closing stages. Their efforts were rewarded with a third goal which eased the pressure, before a late fourth sealed an impressive victory.
