HEAVY rain - almost the first for a month - caused havoc with the West Somerset Cricket League’s first full programme of games this summer with all matches affected.

A number of games got underway but those which did were eventually abandoned due to downpours throughout the afternoon.

Watchet, the most successful side in recent years, began the defence of their title in Division One with an away game against Kilve, who had lost their opening fixture the previous weekend against second division champions Crowcombe.

Watchet had made 77-1 in 15 overs when it rained with Matt Lovell 24 not out and Alastair Harrison 43 not out, his knock including six fours and a six. Watchet collected 15 points while Kilve received 13.

Crowcombe’s hopes of gaining their second win in eight days were dashed at Bagborough - but the visitors were in some trouble at 103-7 when the game was abandoned with Sajid Ahmed having scored 35 and Hugh Harris 17.

Mathew Raffill made a brilliant start to the season with the ball, snapping up 5-18 in seven mean overs, while Henry Stiraker and David Stiraker both picked up a wicket.

Morebath managed 45-1 in eight overs against Bridgetown while Sampford Arundel were 53-3 after nine overs in their derby game against Ashbrittle, who were runners-up last season.

Sadly, Brompton Ralph were unable to fulfil their fixture away to Over Stowey who were awarded 35 points.

Hemyock, promoted as champions of Division Three, were also not able to play their home game against Stoke St Mary and conceded the match.

Roadwater were 137-2 in their home fixture with Winsford with Vishnu Kombath having made 31 and Adam Bishop 66, while Kieren Roberts was unbeaten on 31.

Gareth Waldeck scored 31 for Stogumber who were 105 for 5 after 12 overs against Cannington with Robert Coombs taking 3-26, while there were wickets for Stephen King and Hugh Ogle.

The fixture between Churchinford, who should have been relegated after finishing second from bottom last season, and Cutcombe was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Carhampton would have welcomed the bad weather. They were 49-8 after 27 overs in their home game against Minehead when the match was called off. Not one Carhampton batter managed to get into double figures against the bowling of Nicholas Maggs who took 3-16 in six overs, Sreejith Anilkumar (1-10), Renjeesh Kristnan (2-28), Josh Dyer (1-13) and Logan Harrison (1-6).

Despite such poor scoring, Carhampton still picked up 14 points while Minehead collected 20.

Buckland St Mary & Bishopswood had made 37-1 when their game at Wiveliscombe was brought to a halt with I Every having made 25 not out.

In Division Four Taunton Deane were 101-2 at Spaxton with Rohit Rohit hitting 55 while opener David Webb was 20 not out.
