MINEHEAD Cricket Club and West Somerset College are hosting ‘An Evening with Thomo and Nolli’ at the college on June 17.

The event will feature two special guests who have enjoyed success on the world sports stage - former Somerset cricketer Alfonso Thomas and Danielle Waterman, a member of the England Women’s XV which won the Rugby World Cup in 2014.

Thomas made his debut for South Africa in 2007 and a year later joined Somerset, where he remained until he retired at the end of last season.

In his time with the county, he took more than 600 wickets and became the first-ever Somerset bowler to take four wickets with four balls in the County Championship.

He also gained a reputation as one of the finest ‘death bowlers’ in T20 cricket and is the third highest wicket taker in the world with 263 victims.

Former West Somerset College student Danielle – known as Nolli - started her career with Minehead Barbarians and went onto represent the South West and the England Senior Academy at the age of 15 before becoming the youngest player to represent England in 2003.

Since then she has represented England Women on 60 occasions, scoring one of the tries in the World Cup final triumph over Canada in 2014.

Later this summer she will be heading for the Rio Olympics as part of the England Sevens team.

The evening will be hosted by Dean Allen, himself an old boy of West Somerset College, whose book Empire, War and Peace was published last year.

The evening aims to celebrate everyone from West Somerset who has gone on to represent their country in their sport, - in addition to Nolli, these currently include Carol Matravers (England Over 60s Hockey) and Charlie Tudball and Keelan Owen (England Youth Angling).

Tickets for the evening cost £10 to include win and cheese, and all the money raised will go towards sports equipment for West Somerset College and to Tom White, Justin Harris, John Webber and Richard Henson’s 10 Peaks Fund Raiser.

Individual tickets or tables of eight can be obtained from organisers Stuart Tudball (07926 186690) or Jonathan Reed at the college.

They would also like to hear from anyone who has represented England at any level at sport or who has a local relative who has.
