BRIDGETOWN got their season in the top division of the West Somerset Cricket League off to a great start when they beat their visitors Morebath by seven wickets.

After winning the toss, home skipper Ben Luxton asked Morebath to bat and it wasn’t very long before his decision was proved to be the right one as opening bowler Chris Wookey reduced the visitors to 18 for three.

Morebath ‘keeper Carl Hooper then came to the wicket to join skipper Steve Kelland and between them they steadied the situation. Hooper helped to add 41 for the fourth wicket before he was bowled by Tom Gliddon for 31, which came off 36 balls and included four 4s and two 6s. Morebath then lost two further wickets before opener Kelland was joined by Josh Thorne who together added 26 for the seventh wicket before Thorne became one of Ben Weetch’s three victims when he was caught by Dan Sizer for 12.

The patient Kelland, who had batted from the start, had taken his score onto 13 from 45 balls was the ninth wicket to fall shortly after which Morebath were all out for 100 off 23.1 overs. Tom Gliddon ended with two wickets for 14 from his miserly nine overs, four of which were maidens, Wookey ended with three for 21 from his four overs Weetch claimed three for 18 from five, while there was one each for Theo Sizer and Dan Cross.

The Bridgetown reply was given a good start by the openers who put on 54 before Dan Sizer perished leg before to Miguel Tenreiro for 25, which he scored from 37 deliveries and contained one 4 and three 6s. The hosts lost new batter Freddy Stevens cheaply before Kenny Cross was then joined by skipper Ben Luxton who helped the score onto 85 before he was out for 17.

Cross was then joined by Wookey who together saw Bridgetown to 101 for three in 26 overs and victory by seven wickets .Edward Wensley with two for 24 from three overs and Tenreiro with one for 12 from five were the Morebath wicket takers.

Bridgetown will be hoping to build upon their successful start to the season when they travel to face champions Ashbrittle this coming weekend, where they can expect a tough game.
