LAST weekend saw Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club hold their annual club championship.

Conditions were blustery but the rain held off for most of the weekend as 91 members played for the main Club Championship - a gross competition - and the Tony Ridler nett competition.

The championship saw two players - local professional and ex-Ryder Cup player Brian Waites and the evergreen Keith Babb - each scorer 153 for their two rounds.

Although Brian went on to win the play-off, Keith was crowned club champion as Brian was playing as a professional.

Keith has now won the competition at least once in each of the last five decades, his previous successes coming in 1977, 1984, 1990 and 2000.

The main contenders for the Tony Ridler Trophy were up-and-coming youngsters Owen Thresher and Robbie Hamblin, Robbie winning with a nett score of 65 on Saturday and 73 on Sunday.

l The Warreners from Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club lost 41/2-11/2 away at Ilfracombe against North Devon Police.

The winning pair were Mike Bowater and Paul Beck (3 and 1) while Gareth Latham and Graham Wells halved their match.
