THIS week’s Your Community in Lockdown feature series is about Dulverton – its Good Neighbours Scheme and individual efforts to help many of the town’s vulnerable people during the Covid 19 lockdown.
Among them is Mick Orton, who runs the Copper Kettle with his wife Kate. He set himself some amazing physical challenges each week based on virtual exercises using the café’s renowned beautiful garden.
For the first week, he climbed up and down Dunkery Beacon using the steps up to the garden; week two saw him running round Wimbleball. He then lifted one of Tarr Steps slabs by lifting a five-kilo weight over his head 407 times!
Last week Mick exceeded all his challenges by walking and running a full marathon of more than 26 miles over 12 hours. He had a short break during this when he helped deliver cream teas for the VE Day celebrations.
This week’s challenge is an 80-minute test themed on rugby, which is a one of Mick’s lifelong passions.
Mick has not sought sponsorship for his challenges but asked people to donate items for the Dulverton Food Bank: “People have been so kind leaving donations of food on the table outside the Copper Kettle - it’s been a fantastic response, plus over £120 has also been donated.”
