CHILDREN turned detective at Cutcombe School when they were visited by Guy Clothier, from the Somerset Waste Action Programme. The pupils spent the day investigating where waste goes, looking specifically at recycling and composting. Cutcombe School already recycles paper, batteries and ink cartridges, and composts its food waste for use in the vegetable garden. Guy showed the children how waste products are recycled and what they are made into and suggested ways of reducing the waste. The children are making a special effort to reduce the waste in their lunch boxes and the school is hoping its efforts will result in a gold SWAP award, to go with the silver award they had last year. Children attending Cutcombe School live in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty so they are very aware of the need to preserve their environment and the important part that waste management plays in this.
