HOME-MADE wine maker Andrew Bristow is toasting his success after being crowned Master Winemaker at the Wales and West Federation of Wine and Beermakers' annual festival. Andrew scored the most points in the 38 wine classes from some 2,000 entries to take the title for the fourth time. He clinched two firsts in the fresh grape red dry and the table white wine sweet categories to pick up both the Bert Hall Trophy and the Butlins Trophy. He was also presented with the Bishops Cleeve Shield for the most points in all the wine and beer classes. His prizewinning tally included seconds in classes for three bottles of white dry, red dry and after dinner wine red sweet (dessert) and table rosé, medium dry. On top of that he secured five thirds, three fourths and three sixth places. Among the more unusual classes was a wine made from a root or vegetable, with Andrew plumping for a medium sweet carrot wine. He also scored highly with a medium sweet gooseberry wine. Andrew last collected the Master Winemaker accolade in 1999 and has been home brewing for many years. He said: "I enjoy the whole process, especially using items from the hedgerows and gardens."
