A FORUM steering Williton's regeneration is calling for West Somerset District Council to centralise its offices in the village. The siting of the new civic centre was thrown back into the melting point at the end of May when Somerset County Council pulled the plug on a partnership scheme with the district authority that would have seen new offices and a library built on the market/railway site. Business and community leaders in Williton had previously fought to keep the offices in the village, which has now been named as one of four potential sites for the new centralised development, minus the library - three of which are in Minehead. And members of the Williton Regeneration Forum, a non-elected body of councillors and business and community representatives, voted overwhelmingly at a meeting last Thursday to back Williton as the favoured site. Cllr Robin Venner, a member of the forum, told his Williton Parish Council colleagues at their meeting on Monday that the overwhelming wish was for the offices to be located in the village. And Cllr Diane Hooper, who also represents the parish council on the forum, said: "We have said that Williton wants it at all costs." District council market towns regeneration officer Pete Vallance confirmed that one of the options on the table was to centralise in Williton. But he said other discussions had focused on the regeneration of the central site if the council moves from its current Killick Way base. He said a figure of £200,000 for a possible community hall as a spin-off from any redevelopment of the land had been put forward by district council chief executive Tim Howes as an indication of the cash which might be available. But Mr Vallance said Mr Howes had made it clear that the money could be dependent on the scale of the residential element of any redevelopment. All four options for the new civic centre are due to be discussed at seminars for district councillors later this month, with the final decision likely to be taken by the full council in August.
