SIR — The very idea that the Minehead Visitor Centre should be under threat in a town that is so economically dependant upon visitors is silly and the councils should surely look again at their priorities.
Quite rightly, they are said to be seeking ways to properly fund the centre in 2011/12 but I suspect that local businesses may, with every justification, believe that they are already paying for the facility via their Council Tax.
Is this a case where "The Big Society" idea can assist? Why not recruit a volunteer workforce to support a reduced number of employed staff and thereby cut costs?
An excellent example of volunteers in action is the information office at the railway. This is manned seven days a week entirely by Minehead based volunteers.
