SIR — We have just returned from a walking holiday (based at Selworthy HF Holidays) and on our day off from walking we went to Watchet.
We had been before but over 25 years ago, when the kids were small, in a caravan or tent and remembered coming down to the harbour at midnight to see a big Russian ship leave . . . .ah memories. The kids still remember that bit too!
So has Watchet changed in that time? Well yes, the new marina was a surprise but the harbour area still looks nice and economic needs change, thus so must the town, as indeed it has for a 1000 years.
The main reason for this note is to say what a wonderful warm, friendly welcome we had from everyone one in the shops, cafés etc.
The town is full of interest and we were particularly impressed with the splendid town crier who, looking very smart, was so nice to a group of visiting schoolchildren, letting them ring the bell and shout out for him. He even asked us where we were from.
Also two gentlemen at the desk in the very interesting Watchet Museum went out of their way to be pleasant and they don't even charge entry (a smart move, as many more visitors will come in and then who could resist making a donation after).
All in all a really great day out, and the town certainly lives up to its promise as illustrated in the nice town guide.
Thank you all at Watchet, we will be back, hopefully sooner than another 25 years!
Malcolm and Veronica McPartlan,
Buckinghamshire.
