VETERANS and serving officers joined forces on Monday to raise the Armed Forces flag at the headquarters of West Somerset Council in the run-up to Armed Forces Day tomorrow (Saturday).

The ceremony was led by the chairman of West Somerset Council, Cllr Stuart Dowding, and was attended by councillors, members of the public and members of staff.

Cllr Dowding welcomed representatives from 40 Commando Royal Marines based at Norton Manor, 6 Rifles, HMS Somerset, the Royal British Legion, the Burma Star Association, the Arctic Star Association, police and fire service.

He referred to two notable anniversaries this year – the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and VE Day in 1945 – and to the work being done by today's armed forces.

Prayers were led by the Rev Clive Gilbert and West Somerset Council's chief executive, Penny James, thanked all those present for marking the start of Armed Forces Week.

The Kohima Epitaph was read by Burma Star veteran Rob Johnson, aged 90, who also spoke on its significance and importance.

Meanwhile, Dunster county councillor Christine Lawrence had the honour of raising a similar flag above the offices of Somerset County Council in Taunton in her capacity as chairman of the authority.

The county event was attended by serving troops, families, veterans and cadets.

Cllr Lawrence, who also attended the West Somerset event, said: "It is a great privilege to raise this flag as a small gesture of thanks to our Armed Forces.

"I think I speak for everyone in Somerset when I say how grateful we are to all the men and women who do so much at home and abroad to keep us safe."
