SIR — After watching the BBC Panorama documentary 'Undercover Nurse' on July 20 on the treatment of (mainly) elderly patients on a hospital ward, I feel compelled to write and express my concern at the portrayal of elderly care both in hospitals and residential homes. People at home who watched the programme must be terrified at the thought that they or members of their family may ever need to go into a residential home or hospital. Please can I reassure people who watched or read about the programme that not all organisations providing care for the elderly are like that! I am the manager of Wyndham House residential home in Minehead, part of the Somerset Care Group, which has 33 rooms and is currently expanding to 50. Our residents are well cared for and loved, and I would not have it any other way. We have an excellent team of staff who care deeply about our clients and we have become 'one big family'. We provide a day care service where clients can come and experience life in residential care, enabling us to reassure them and their families that they will be treated with dignity and respect once they choose to enter full-time residential care. Anyone who is apprehensive about going into residential care or arranging this service for a family member is welcome to contact me for a chat or to visit us at Wyndham House, and hopefully this will help to allay their fears. When visiting one of our clients in hospital the other day, her words to me were "Can I come home, please?" and I think that says it all! Madeleine Flanagan, Manager, Wyndham House, Minehead.
