SIR — I am writing in response to various letters recently on ‘Your Letters’ page concerning the connection of the West Somerset Railway with Taunton station. This is something I have thought of for a few years but thought it was wishful thinking.

My husband and I own a caravan near Minehead and have done for a number of years. As we got older and retired, we looked forward to spending more time in the area. Sadly, this isn’t the case as recently my husband was diagnosed with an illness and has had to give up driving. I have rheumatoid arthritis so cannot drive either. Our family are very good and bring us down but they have their own bust working lives to get on with.

To come to Minehead on public transport would be idea. A train to Taunton is fine but the 28 bus is a no-go for older people with walking problems and a small case each. The only way to do it is to get a taxi to Bishops Lydeard and then the train.

As we are both members of the West Somerset Railway, we love to support them but it’s not as often as we would like.

The trains don’t have to be fast inter-city – the normal West Somerset trains are find. They just need to go to Taunton and I’m sure this would take pressure off your busy roads, too.

A connecting train between Taunton and Bishops Lydeard would be fine. The Cardiff train which terminates at Taunton would be an ideal solution if it would terminate at Bishops Lydeard.

You live in a beautiful part of the country but it is very difficult to get to without a car if you are older travellers, and I’m sure there must be many more people in our situation who would like to support your tourist trade but find it very hard to do so.
