SIR — I refer to last week's report on the proposed supermarket in Williton village.

What a lot of propaganda from the applicant- extra jobs, improved roads, regeneration of a brownfield site with increased trade and visitors, pedestrian link to increase footfall and further investment in Williton.

Now let's put this into perspective.

There will be no extra jobs because existing businesses will lose trade and therefore lose staff.

The junction at Bank Street will never improve, it will become even more congested.

The brownfield site could provide homes that we need.

It has not been proved that we are lacking in food stores. Visitors who come to shop do not tend to hang around in Williton especially if they are on holiday.

Who would want to invest in Williton once the main street has become a ghost town?

If the instigators of this supermarket think people will not need to shop in Minehead or Taunton they are so wrong. Women want to shop, and the more big modern high street stores, the better.

Buying food is just a necessity and we are already served adequately with these now.

The excellent chemist, the popular café in the Spar shop, quality vegetables and meat, the Post Office, which most villages crave, plenty of newspapers and magazines - and what would the older people do in our population without the daily delivery of news.

Do we really want to see all of this go for a supermarket and all the ugliness it brings to the surrounding area?
