SIR — Re the letters against the petition to allow dogs on the beach all year round. If, by some terrible twist of fate, someone suddenly went blind, deaf or had fits, they would find a trained dog would give a new independence to their lives. All at once, the "dreadful animal" becomes a lifetime friend and helpmate. I have to sit on the hillside with my dog while my grandchildren swim in the sea although the same golden retriever is allowed in at the opera. I find far more human rubbish on the beach - dirty nappies etc - than a whole pack of dogs could manage. In answer to the visitor question, we have a motor home and go around the country. Most motor home people own a dog and they can go on holiday too. We pay the same fees, parking, pitches, food, fuel and entertainment as everyone else but, because of anti-animal bigots, we must sit on the promenade. Is this fair?
