Watchet WI creates a tidal wave

NEWLY-named Watchet WI Wavemakers bet eight rival teams in the WI County Quiz – at the start of a run of successes.

The Windmill Inn, St Audries, hosted the area quiz event when Watchet’s team – Elaine Preston, Jan Martin, Ann Binding, Geraldine Malin and Anne and David Horsey – ended up 12 points ahead their rivals.

Just three days later, on July 28, the Wavemakers won the WI Shield at Bicknoller Flower Show. Their ‘small table’ arrangement was entitled ‘A Country Garden’.

And on August 4, the Wavemakers won the Carter Cup for the WI competition at Taunton Flower Show with a ‘large table’ arrangement called Gardeners’ World. The team members were Elaine Preston, Anne Horsey, Jan Martin, Veronica Dance, Millie McDonald, Fay Ross, Shirley Williams and Val Marshall.

The Wavemakers also entered Watchet Carnival celebrating the WI involvement in the Suffragette movement, women’s rights and the WI’s future outlook.
