WATCHET produced another late comeback on Saturday to salvage a point at Peasedown after trailing 2-0 with only 15 minutes left.

The Red and Blacks were generally second best for the first hour of a match played in awful conditions, but after clawing their way back they ended up looking the more likely winners.

The robust home side adapted to the swirling wind and driving drizzle far better than Watchet early on, and even though they were playing against the elements first, were a little unfortunate not to be ahead at the interval.

Steve Moore brought off two routine saves and then a good one as the visiting defence was made to look distinctly uncomfortable, and there were other opportunities which Peasedown might have made more of.

Some dubious tackling clearly rattled the Red and Blacks, who were more blatant in their response as their lack of passing moves added to the frustration.

From a loose ball, Robbie Hopkins hit a first timer from 25 yards which the keeper held low down to his left.

Dave Spence made a couple of timely blocks inside his own area before Watchet had the clearest opening before the break. Steve Wild eluded the linesman's flag to go through and round the keeper, but the wind took the ball further than he would have liked and a defender had time to get back and stop his angled shot on the line.

On the whole Watchet gave a better account of themselves in the second half, but it was not long before they faced an uphill task when Peasedown took the lead.

With his defence stretched as a ball was played forward on the left, Moore made an injudicious dash from his line which left him stranded as the home left winger reached it first to slot tidily into the vacant net.

Peasedown forced a series of corners with Moore making three smart stops and Watchet seemed to have weathered the storm when the Bath side struck again.

Minutes after a double Watchet substitution, out of the blue a cross-cum-shot from the right drifted over Moore to make it 2-0.

Almost immediately Watchet had a chance to reduce the arrears when Nick Criddle latched onto a ball down the middle, only to be denied by the keeper's boot with a ground shot.

It proved a brief reprieve for the home side as soon after, Criddle flicked on Wild's corner into the wind at the near post and Hopkins brought the ball down six yards out before ramming a left footed volley into the roof of the net.

Peasedown had lost their way and with ten minutes remaining, the Red and Blacks were back on level terms.

Lawrence Monaghan's pass forward on the right found Hopkins skipping away from a challenge to measure a low early cross which Wild reached ahead of his marker to send in a deft first-time shot which looped beyond the keeper.

Sean Kenny's pace caused the Peasedown defence problems in the latter stages and his well-struck free kick brought a flying save from the keeper.

With the home team having lost their way, Watchet were finding more space when they went forward and Monaghan was only denied by a last-ditch challenge inside the box when a shooting chance loomed.
