THE Watchet Paper Mill Heritage Legacy project is nearing completion, and there is a final chance for people to pass on their memories tomorrow (Saturday).

Since the closure of Wansbrough Paper Mill in December 2015, the site and its many buildings have stood empty, but work has been going on over the past few months to ensure that the history behind 250 years of paper-making in the town is not lost.

Contains Art, a community interest company based in Watchet, wanted to create to pay homage to the business and its many staff, so a decision was made to archive the site and in January this year the project got underway.

With initial training and guidance from Esther Hoyle, senior archivist at Somerset Heritage, it has been run by local writer Kalina Newman, the mill’s negineering manager Chris Northam and a team of enthusiastic volunteers.

For the past five months, the site has been scoured and sifted through for relevant archival material and the “Wansbrough Collection” is now complete.

In conjunction with the paper mill archive, the team is also creating a community archive made up of paperwork, photos and materials found within the town and further afield.

It has been collecting stories about family members who worked at the mill, documents and letters relating to the mill and photographs of the site, its workers and its history.

And tomorrow, a final community archive event will be held at the Phoenix Centre from 11am to 3pm, when anyone with stories ior tiems of interest can go along.

The Watchet Paper Mill Heritage Legacy project will culminate in an exhibition in September.
