THE books were flying off the shelves at Watchet Library when local borrowers turned out to demonstrate the strength of opposition to its threatened closure.

At least 150 people turned up during the three hours the library was open last Saturday as part of a national day of action for the Save Our Libraries campaign.

Peter Murphy, a Watchet town councillor, who is also heading up a recently set up library working group, said: "The library was half emptied of books after the event.

"It was very well supported and our local Mp Ian Liddell-Grainger has given his wholehearted support for our efforts to keep the library open."
