A BATON relay marking the 100th anniversary of the RAF will arrive in Watchet on St George’s Day (April 23) to mark the town’s special wartime links with the armed forces.

Watchet is one of 100 venues to be visited by a baton-carrying relay team over 100 days to celebrate the service of those who have defended the UK over the past 100 years.

They will be greeted with a civic welcome at Watchet war memorial and the nearby Phoenix Centre at 11am.

“There is an open invitation to all serving and former RAF men and women and their families to come to an event which is of national importance to us in West Somerset,” said local organiser Sara Summers.

“All are welcome, so pass the word around.”

The baton is being carried around the UK by RAF personnel, cadets, veterans and members of the service’s sporting bodies.

Made of materials used in past present and future RAF planes, the baton has already been transported by rowers, parachuted from an aircraft, carried on horseback and flown on a power-kite.

The relay began its journey at the capital’s Royal Courts of Justice on April 1 and will end on July 10 at the London Horseguards’ Parade.
