WATCHET stepped back in time to celebrate Christmas and an ancient legend.
A community-led group relaunched Caturn's Night last Friday and local people turned out to join in the fun.
The legend dates back to the 17th century when Queen Catherine of Braganza, wife of King Charles 11, was apparently so pleased with her purchase of Watchet Blue fabric that she decreed a night of celebration with cider and hotcakes for the townspeople.
The 2012 celebration included a Christmas market, entertainment and a procession through the town.
Santa arrived by boat and the Christmas lights were switched on by Somerset's High Sheriff Sylvana Chandler.
The crowds enjoyed mulled cider and Caturns cakes, along with a hog roast, music and stalls.
Sara Summers, a member of the organising committee, said the event had been a great success.
"Some things needed a few tweaks but for a first attempt, it was great," she said.
"The majority of the shops stayed open late but we are over the moon at how well it went.
"We were also really lucky with the weather - it was about the only evening recently when it didn't rain."
The event raised around £165 which, together with a £200 grant from energy company EDF will go towards the 2013 celebrations.
