WATCHET Town made certain of promotion to the Premier Division of the Somerset Senior League on Wednesday evening with a 1-0 win against Clevedon United Reserves.

After victories in their three matches in the previous six days (reported below), the Red and Blacks went into their final game knowing promotion was virtually assured.

Only Castle Cary could have denied them, but with an inferior goal difference, they needed to beat champions Welton Rovers and Watchet to lose, both by clear margins.

Although Castle Cary won their match 3-0, also on Wednesday evening, goal difference became irrelevant as the Red and Blacks sank Clevedon.

They had to survive some heavy pressure at the start and towards the end of the match, but an opportunist goal from Steve Wild gave them their 1-0 win.

They are currently second in the Division One table but Long Sutton, who are four points behind them, have three games to play and can pip them for the runners-up spot.

But nothing can prevent Watchet's return to the Premier Division after an absence of 13 years.
