SIR — Packaging. Due to the vast number of products that we can buy, packaging is more of a problem than it would otherwise be. As landfill is no longer an option, other methods must be found to replace it. They are for the most part more expensive and the trick will be to cut those costs.
Large furnaces have been suggested to burn the rubbish and the heat that they will create will be used to advantage when converted to other forms of energy. Some people, however, seem to be objecting to them.
Another way to save money is to crush cardboard boxes before dumping them into bins. This saves the number of bins that have to be collected. Waste collection is at the moment a cause of much discussion and those discussions seem to be making slow progress.
Nuclear waste: The amount created is much less than from those power plants built in the 50s and 60s. It does occur to me that, if the space shuttles were sent up into space with nuclear waste and were not required to return to Earth, they could be sent to the sun where the waste would be burned up very quickly. This may sound a bit far fetched but much progress has been made in the last few years.
