A GROUP of villagers was so appreciative of their local postman, they gave him a retirement send-off with a flourish when they raised almost £600 as a parting gift and held a special coffee morning in his honour.

Around 80 people attended the Fitzhead event last Saturday morning, held in the Tithe Barn, to say thanks to John Jacob, their postie for the past 15 years.

John and his wife Lorraine knew they were coming for a farewell do, but were knocked out when a collection box with £595 was handed over.

There was also a card specially designed by local artist Heather Catchpole, with scores of signatures from well-wishers in the village, plus other cards and an enormous chocolate cake made and decorated by the event organiser, Cilla Owens.

“I’m absolutely blown away – words fail me. This is a very special place,” said John. “I have a terrible memory, but I’ll never forget this.

“I don’t think I did more than anyone else, but a day like this, with all these people, is so special.”

Cilla said: “John has been exceptional. He’s always cheerful, and is a really good man.”

In a tribute to the postman at the event, her husband Graham said: “In a town, it’s rare to know the postman’s name. John knows who we all are, and we know John.

“He knows every villager, and if there’s a problem, he passes the word on.”
