Exford villagers were unable to celebrate the reopening of their shop, Exmoor Stores, because of Covid regulations – so instead they marked its first anniversary.

The business had been closed for 18 months following the death of one of the previous owners and people had to travel to Withypool to shop.

But then three local investors stepped in, refurbished much of the building including the roof and signage – and it was back in business.

That was a year ago: “We couldn’t celebrate as we had wanted when the shop opened because of Covid rules so we thought we’d do something now, a year on, to say thank you to everyone who’s supported us,” said manager Hayley Hunter.

“It’s been a hard year to open up a local shop with Covid but I am proud that we have achieved it and got through this awful time.”

Rector of Exford the Rev David Weir gave a speech at the celebration, attended by, among others, directors Anna Connell, Stephen Waley-Cohen and Henry Rawson, and staff members Heather Roberts, Di Bulllard, Sue Pugsley, Lucy Nicholls, Jane Holdsworth and manager Hayley Hunter.

Hayley added: “The one- year celebration was a big success with lots of locals and visitors joining us to celebrate and the weather couldn’t have been better.”
