CARHAMPTON'S post office will be reopening later this month after a concerted campaign by local people. The Free Press reported last month how villagers had launched a petition to show their support for the community facility after the post office was forced to close suddenly due to ill health. Now David and Pauline Green of the neighbouring Carhampton Stores have been given the green light to carry out the building works necessary to ensure the post office can re-open. Mrs Green said yesterday: "We've got the builders in at the moment to knock through the wall between the stores and the post office and are hoping to open on Monday May 14. "We thought we would open for 12 hours a week to begin with, from 9am to 12noon on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday." The building work is vital as the post office forms part of the home of the current postmaster and a door to his property has to be blocked up and another doorway re-opened between the post office and stores to ensure staff have access to toilet facilities. Mrs Green said she was delighted to be able to reopen the post office for the community, having previously run one for five years. The couple have been at the stores for three years and will oversee the day-to-day operation of the post office, which will now come under the remit of Watchet sub postmaster Graham Kennedy.
