WEST Somerset residents are being encouraged to watch a video on Monday before having their say on the political structure of the district council.

All county and district councils throughout the country are currently busy consulting people as to how they would like to see their councils structured.

The options include having a directly elected mayor with a cabinet, a cabinet and leader, a directly elected mayor and council manager or, for councils with populations under 85,000, a committee-based system.

West Somerset District Council was one of the first local authorities to try out the cabinet and leader scheme, and is now being asked to make sure the set-up meets with approval outside the council.

Under the Local Government Act 2000, they and other councils have to ask a wide variety of groups about the structure of the authority.

Talks have already taken place with parish councils, youth groups, health care bodies and chambers of trade.

Somerset's district councils have joined forces with the county council to produce a 15-minute video explaining exactly what the proposals are and how each option would work.

West Somerset residents are being given the chance to watch the video before casting their votes for their favoured option.

The video will be shown continuously between 4pm and 7pm at Danesfield Community School, in Williton, on Monday.

Voting forms will also be available to ensure everyone who goes along can have their say.
