WATCHET musician Dave Parkman has been made an honorary vice-president of the West Somerset Brass Band, in recognition of more than half-a-century of outstanding service.

Mr Parkman joined the then-Watchet Royal British Legion Band in 1971 and went on to play for an incredible 54 years - spending nearly all that time as the band’s solo horn player.

A spokesperson for the band said: “Holding such a demanding position for so long is no small achievement, and Dave’s skilful musicianship, reliability, and quiet leadership have been vital to the band.

“The tenor horn section will always consider him their spiritual leader.”

The band became West Somerset Brass in 1952 and has about 30 regular players.

Over the years, their ages have ranged from 10 to 86-years-old.

Today, apart from the main band there is also a training band and a learner group and new members are always welcome, with or without musical experience.

The band undertakes a wide range of engagements, including church services, concerts, fetes, and carnivals.

Apart from his musical ability, Mr Parkman also served for many years on the band’s committee, organising engagements.

An iconic figure in the local music scene, he is well-known in the town for his humour, camaraderie, and dedication to keeping band traditions alive.

These include the long-standing Friday night trip to the Royal British Legion after rehearsal, a ritual he started decades ago.

The spokesperson said: “Members describe Dave with the musical term ‘FFF’ - fully committed, fun, and friendly - the perfect summation of a player who has given so much to the band and to the local community over the years.”

After Mr Parkman was presented with the honour, the band celebrated his award in the way he would have approved - at The Royal British Legion Club, in Watchet.
