WAR veterans from Dulverton were honoured for their service and their courage at a celebration to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of World War Two. 'Thanks for our Future' was an event staged by the town council, which brought together Dulverton's youth with the generations who sacrificed theirs in conflict. Representatives from all the armed services and the Merchant Navy met for the commemoration in the gardens of the Copper Kettle Tea Rooms in the town centre lon Sunday. Some proudly displayed their medals, while others simply brought their memories of a time that many prefer to forget. Children from the West Somerset Community College, Dulverton Middle School and All Saints First School presented Citizen of the Year certificates to the veterans - an award bestowed by local civic leaders. And the youngsters - Jonathan Williams, Harry Rogers, Dawn-Marie Williams and Alexandra Rose - also read messages of thanks. Veteran badges were presented to the servicemen and women by RAF warrant Officer Gary Grey on behalf of the Ministry of Defence. Earlier, the veterans had been welcomed by town council vice chairman Susan Gibb. And after a blessing by Dulverton's vicar the Rev John Thorogood, Trish Cozens, owner of the Copper Kettle, put on an excellent tea in the gardens which had been decorated with bunting. Town councillor Pat Skipper, a member of the committee which organised the event, said: "It was very well attended and we were so lucky with the weather - it was lovely and sunny but not too hot. "After the formalities we had a wonderful wartime sing-along, led by Meigan Lyons and two friends. "It all went very well."
