SIR — As I splashed my way home last Thursday evening I couldn't believe how many blocked drains I passed that were covered with leaves.

These could easily have been unblocked with a long stick, especially the drains outside shops and houses where it would have been of great benefit to passers-by who had to wade through deep puddles.

I'm not suggesting people go shopping carrying a long stick, but if it's right outside your front door then deal with it before it gets worse.

I unblocked the drain outside where I work recently and the water flowed away instantly. It was quite fulfilling and it saved us being flooded out later.
