TEAMS from all over the country will be in Minehead tomorrow (Saturday) to take part in the English Tug of War Association National Championships. Teams from as far afield as Cheshire, Sussex, the Midlands, the Greater London area, Lincolnshire, Bedfordshire and East Anglia, as well from Somerset, Devon and Cornwall, will be competing. As reported in the Free Press last week, the event is taking place at Minehead Football Club's ground in Irnham Road, and as well as using local hotels, restaurants and other facilities in the area, the teams will be putting on a showcase of sport which everyone is welcome to go along to and support – entry is completely free. There will be event programmes on sale on the day as well as other merchandise, together with hot and cold refreshments. The winning teams will go on to represent England at the European Championships in Italy in September. Competition between the teams so far this year around the country has been very close, so there should be some exciting and entertaining competition on the day. The day gets underway at 10am, and for more information you can visit the association web site at http://www.tugofwar.co.uk">www.tugofwar.co.uk. Minehead will also be hosting the 2007 European tug of war championships, when hundreds of competitors from across the continent will come to the town.
