TEAMWORK helped produce a unique first birthday celebration for Williton's Little Horseshoe nursery. The special anniversary last Friday was marked by the unveiling of a garden screen featuring painted scenes of a West Somerset Railway journey from Williton to Minehead. The screen was the end product of four months' work in partnership with the Minehead-based TRUCE - Timber Re-Use Enterprise. Funding from the Neighbourhood Learning in Deprived Communities initiative enabled staff and parents to research ideas in an IT session with tutor Philip Hulme and adult learning co-ordinator Vicky Browne. Parents were shown how to use the internet and edit pictures of West Somerset landmarks, the West Somerset Railway and local wildlife. The images were then used as a guide for designing and painting the screen. And according to nursery manager Rebecca Polsom, the end result has a real 'wow' factor. In addition, several parents have been so inspired by the project they have now taken up voluntary posts with TRUCE as the first steps back into employment. Six have even signed up for a 'key skill level two' course through the organisation, while the opportunity to work with wood has given one mother the confidence to install her own kitchen. "This has been an excellent project for teamwork," said Rebecca. "Parents have given their time and talents to the project, some have not not painted since they left school, some have adapted their art skills from exhibition pieces to a larger scale. "Everyone has brought something to the project and they should feel a great sense of achievement. "This is something the children will enjoy for a long time. Every time you look at the screen you see something you have not spotted before. "We want parents to be part of the nursery's development and growth. A hands-on project like this one has been a great opportunity for getting to know them , plus it's been excellent fun and something different." Any parents wanting to join the next phase of learning activities, which begins on Wednesday can contact Rebecca on 01984 635981. Parents, youngsters and staff are pictured at the unveiling ceremony.
