A 20-year-old Watchet rugby player fell to his death from a hotel balcony last Friday while holidaying with friends in Majorca.

A young star of Minehead Barbarians rugby team, Freddie died at 3am on Friday June 7, after falling from the second-floor balcony of the four-star Wave House Hotel in the Magaluf seaside resort.

According to Spanish police, Freddie, also known as Freddie MacVicar, was found fatally injured on the ground underneath the balcony.

Police and emergency services fought to save his life, but he died before he could be taken to hospital. The friends with whom he was on holiday were asleep and had to be woken with the tragic news.

A Magaluf police spokesman said an investigation was underway and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office was in contact with the Spanish authorities.

Paying tribute on Facebook, Minehead Rugby Club said: “It is with the deepest sadness that we have to inform you that one of our own, Freddie Pring, has been involved in an accident abroad and has passed away.

“Please give the family space at this time. Our love and condolences reach out to everyone who knew Freddie.”

Tomorrow’s report in the Free Press includes further tributes to Freddie.
