As expected, £137,514 of public funding for The Yeovil Town Centre Initiatives (YTCI) was clubbed through when the district council's Area South Committee met last week.

YTCI is led by the town centre management and its role is described as "achieving through working in partnership with others".

Town centre manager Nina Higgins attended the meeting last week and gave a brief presentation before councillors engaged in a debate.

Anti-crime and anti-disorder schemes have been high on the agenda, with the creations of a pubwatch scheme and the Yeovil Retail Crime Reduction Team as prime examples of achievements.

The crime reduction team has been so successful it recently won The Safer Shopping Award, which is given by The British Retail Consortium to towns with a capable crime reduction strategy.

Apart from making frequent use of the radiolink system, the crime reduction team also has monthly meetings of its exclusion committee to decide if various troublesome individuals should be banned from all partaking businesses for a period of time.

Ms Higgins, is on a three-year contract that expires in October this year, and councillors had been asked to help keep YTCI going by providing financial means for another three years.

The private sector has already pledged between £15,000-16,000 for each year in that period.

Councillor Tony Lock was very impressed and seconded a recommendation to give the money.

Councillor David Greene was also happy with the suggestion, saying: "What we've heard today shows the value of a town centre manager."

One councillor, Liz Glaisher, voted against the proposal.
