A MAN who has made a huge difference to the lives of young people with learning disabilities has been awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours list.

Ben Graham, 57, vocational programme manager at Foxes Academy in Minehead, which provides vocational training for young adults with learning disabilities, was nominated by principal Tracey Clare-Gray.

“He has more than doubled the placements available to this young disadvantaged group. He has worked tirelessly, often in his own time, to ensure this success,” it said in his citation.

“When Ben first took up the post, local employers were reticent about taking learners. He earned their respect and built up exceptional partnerships, ensuring maximum benefits for his learners.”

Foxes Academy now has over 30 employers in the West Somerset area and Ben has made sure that they feel valued and recognised for the opportunities they are giving young people.

Seventy-nine per cent of Foxes’ leavers were in work, with 55 per cent paid and 45 per cent on a voluntary basis

“Ben has given the learners from Foxes Academy work experience skills that enable them to be part of the big community, earn their living and empower them to be independent,” the citation said.

“What makes his achievements even more remarkable is the fact that this has been accomplished in the middle of an economic recession. He voluntarily gives up his own time to meet with prospective employers, take learners to interview and ensures the smooth transition for every learner into the world of work.”
