HARVEY Grenville, author and trustee of the Parachute Regiment and Airborne Forces Museum, has researched those listed on a memorial tablet in St Petrock’s Church, Timberscombe.

He has produced an illustrated booklet, Timberscombe’s Fallen of World War I, and some of their relatives were among those attending his lecture on the subject in the Village Hall earlier this month.

Harvey’s exhaustive research looked into the military service and the local backgrounds of the 12 who served and died, whether on active service or as a consequence of their service.

Harvey, and his wife Jeanna, had also visited the memorials, battlefields and sites in France which are connected with these soldiers, and diligently traced the monuments where their names are now inscribed for posterity in places of quietness and reflection.

The lecture was in the context of the social and economic conditions of the village at the time. The effect on families was explored and the presence of relatives of some of those honoured on the memorial added a level of poignancy and family pride to the evening.

Refreshments were provided by the Village Hall Committee.

Copies of Timberscombe’s Fallen of World War I are available from St Petrock’s Church and cost £5 with all proceeds going towards church funds to provide modern facilities.
