SIR — Can it be right that Somerset county councillors have awarded themselves a three per cent increase in their personal allowance whilst the staff are to receive a one per cent increase?.

Congratulations to Cllr Hugh Davies for opposing the three per cent increase, and shame on the Conservative administration for proposing the increase and to those county councillors who supported the proposal.
