CELEBRATIONS were mixed with an emotional moment for members of West Somerset Brass Band (WSBB) during a lovely evening for this year’s annual meeting.
Looking back at a busy year and making plans for the months ahead, the band handed out its annual awards to recognise players who had ‘gone the extra mile’.
The Alex Hollweg Trophy for most improved training band member went to Amanda Hedgecock, who plays tenor horn.

Training band conductor Kieren Berry handed over the trophy, praising Amanda’s commitment and clear progress over the past year.
In the main band, the Pete Wilson Shield for most improved player was awarded to trombone player Jasmin Dunn, who had worked really hard this past year.
Musical director Niall Watson presented the shield, recognising Jasmin’s dedication and steady improvement over the previous 12 months.
The bandsman of the year vote, which took place as part of the annual meeting, was so close this year that the Roger Paul Shield was shared between three winners: Kath Mann (tenor horn), Kieren Berry (euphonium), and Michael Butcher (tenor horn).

All three had ‘gone above and beyond’ for the band during the past year, as librarian, training band conductor, and ‘mischief maker’, respectively.
The evening also saw the band members bid a fond farewell to Jenny Shelton, who is stepping down as both cornet player and band secretary.
A band spokesperson said: “Jenny has been a key part of the band and will be greatly missed.”

Band chairman Jodie Watson presented Jenny with a rose bush, appropriately called trumpeter, to say ‘thank you for everything’.

WSBB, which has about 30 members, was formed in 1952 as the Watchet Royal British Legion Band, and changed its name in September, 2008.
