A WEST Somerset couple whose wedding was twice cancelled because of Covid disruptions have praised their wedding cake maker as ‘one of the kindest people we have ever met’.

Justin and Donna (nee Atkins) Damerel were finally married at the third attempt in St Etheldreda’s Church, West Quantoxhead, near Williton.

Their wedding cake was provided by Juliet Hayes after the couple won it in a Free Press competition during 20129, the year in which they were originally going to be married.

Despite Juliet losing her Minehead shop premises The Mixing Bowl during the coronavirus pandemic, she honoured the prize and made the three-tier sponge cake, each with a different flavour - white chocolate and raspberry, salted caramel, and lemon and elderflower.

She also decorated it with a crumb layer of icing, and looked after Donna and Justin’s personalised dinky ducks cake toppers for two years.

Donna said Juliet, who now works from home under the name ‘Homemade cakes by Juliet’ and specialises in gluten, wheat, and dairy-free cakes, had ‘a heart of gold’.

Justin and Donna, who live in Williton, work respectively as a senior project support officer with a mental health charity and as an administrator.

Donna said: “The day itself was amazing and perfect despite the weather.

“Being able to celebrate such a special day with our closest family and friends after so long, having everybody together in one place, was magical.

“We are so grateful to Juliet for honouring the prize I won in 2019.

“Juliet also kindly made us five gluten-free cupcakes in matching flavours and also loaned us a cake stand to fit in with our rustic theme.
