SIR — Further to the last week's letter concerning the signage on the A39, many people say how dangerous this road is when, in reality, it is the users that are dangerous, not the road. Now we have a situation when much-needed repairs and resurfacing are being done, mainly at night thankfully, but the signage is totally inadequate. The yellow ones telling us that the road is shut between 7pm and 7am are so small they can't be read safely, and the large lighted ones have three 'pages' so at normal speed you can only read one or at most two pages. The problem is that the people in charge, having put all the signs out, know what they say. They then don't go back and try to read them as though they are ignorant of their advice. They are then paid at the end of the week/month and couldn't really care less for the chaos they've caused as they avoid the road because only they know when it is shut. More than this, though, they have got a bit of a problem because this year, I think, almost every road in West Somerset has been or is closed, so they have run out of 'Road Closed' and 'Diversion' signs. It also seems incredible that the A39 has been shut at night for resurfacing and at the same time the A358 has been half shut at Bagborough by day, also with no signs warning of the impending doom. Surely these two operations should have been staggered by more than 12 hours. Julian Browning, West Quantoxhead.
